‘Fake Earth’, 8 mm projection and digital projection, 2:20 min in loop, 2013
A 2-channel video installation that incorporates images from one of the first live broadcasts of the Earth seen from space, transmitted by the astronauts of Apollo 11. Paradoxically these very first images of Earth seen from space serve as proof in the widespread (conspiracy) theory that man never set foot on the moon at all.
Drawing on these images taken by NASA’s first Lunar Mission, ‘Fake Earth’ playfully introduces an image of a plastic globe, projected over the historic video-footage. Both spheres seemingly floating in a vast emptiness, falling in and out of conjunction with each other, Armstrong’s verbal descriptions of Earth are edited and manipulated to be equally applicable to the obvious fake of our home planet.
