APE (2023/24), is a video installation that uses Artificial intelligence to generate an alternative timeline for recent Irish historic events, in particular relating to the the struggle for Irish independence.

Historically, the Irish were called and depicted as monkeys by colonising forces in an attempt to demean and dehumanise the Irish population, portraying them as primitive and unintelligent. APE embraces this derogatory stereotype to tell this story anew. Using A.I. as the lens through which the struggle for independance is retold, the images generated appear to be positioned somewhere between authentic documentation and an absurd derision of an often overlooked dark chapter from our collective recent history books.
